Staying Sober at Social Events: 3 Key Strategies

By Dr. Jason Powers, MD, Chief Medical Officer · July 18, 2025 · 4 min read

Navigating social gatherings while maintaining sobriety is one of the more underrated challenges of recovery. The work is real, especially when alcohol is openly part of the event. Three practical strategies make a difference: a reason to be there, an exit, and a lifeline.

Three Essential Strategies

These are not theoretical. They are the things that actually keep people sober at weddings, work parties, holidays, and reunions. Run through them before you go.

Have a Good Reason to Be There

Before you accept any invitation, ask yourself whether the event genuinely aligns with what matters to you. Are you going because you want to, or because you feel obligated? Going with intentional purpose, to celebrate someone you love, to honor a milestone, to show up for a friend, strengthens your commitment to your sobriety. Going on autopilot makes the alcohol louder.

Have an Exit Strategy

Maintaining control over your circumstances is critical. Agency is a powerful tool, and you never need to stay anywhere that feels unsafe, triggering, or emotionally draining.

Drive yourself. Have a rideshare app pre-loaded with payment. Know where the door is. The simple act of having a way out reduces the pressure to push through a hard moment.

Have a Lifeline Support

Recovery does not happen in isolation. Before you go, connect with someone supportive who knows you are going. A sponsor, a trusted friend, a therapist, a treatment professional. Knowing one specific person is on call reduces anxiety and creates accountability without making the night feel heavier than it needs to.

Bonus Insight: Triggers Aren't Mandates

Experiencing cravings or discomfort around alcohol is normal, especially earlier in recovery. The critical thing to remember is that a trigger is a moment, not a command. You always retain the power to pause, breathe, and choose differently. Read more on recovery is not linear if cravings have been heavy.
