Recovery Is Not Linear: A Liberating Perspective

By Dr. Jason Powers, MD, Chief Medical Officer · July 25, 2025 · 4 min read

Recovery is not linear. At first glance, that line can feel overwhelming if you are someone who likes structured growth and tidy timelines. But embracing the non-linearity of recovery is actually deeply liberating. Recovery is not one-size-fits-all, and it is not a competition. Your journey will not look like anyone else's.

When we let go of the expectation of perfect, upward progress, we free ourselves from shame, guilt, and unrealistic expectations. That freedom is what allows recovery to actually take hold.

Cravings Aren't Commandments

Dr. Jason Powers, Chief Medical Officer at Positive Recovery Centers, often describes cravings as waves. If you can watch them without judgment, they come and they go. You do not have to act on every thought or every craving.

Cravings are like waves, and if you can watch them without judgment, they can come and go.

Healthy alternatives, a walk, a jog, calling someone, meeting a friend for coffee, help redirect the impulse without making it bigger than it has to be.

Relapse Isn't a Moral Failing

Relapse is common, and it is not a character flaw. Each moment offers an opportunity to choose differently. Setbacks become learning stages, not permanent failures. Just because you made a mistake does not make you a bad person.

Progress matters more than perfection. Read more on why relapse does not mean failure if you are working through this right now.
