Our Story
Positive Recovery Centers was founded in 2017 by George Joseph, who has spent more than 30 years building addiction treatment programs that actually work.
George ran The Right Step for nearly two decades before selling the company in 2012. He could have walked away. Instead, he built Positive Recovery Centers to help more people, this time using a curriculum developed by Dr. Jason Powers, a physician with a Master of Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania.
The result is the world's first Joint Commission-accredited rehab program built on positive psychology. Where most programs focus on what's broken, we focus on what's strong: character strengths, resilience, engagement, relationships, and meaning. It is the science behind how human beings actually thrive, applied to recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.
Today Positive Recovery operates more than 20 locations across Houston, Austin, and Dallas-Fort Worth, run day to day by President Julie DeNofa, a founding partner and Certified Addiction Registered Nurse, and Chief Marketing and Experience Officer Jamie Demeris. Every program, from medical detox through sober living, runs on the same curriculum and the same set of values.
You don't have to take our word for how that plays out. Read what clients and families say in their own stories of recovery.
What Makes Us Different
Created by our Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Jason Powers. The Positive Recovery curriculum builds on character strengths and the five drivers of human flourishing: positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and achievement. It is the only addiction curriculum of its kind.
We hold the Gold Seal of Approval from the Joint Commission, the same accreditation body trusted by the country's top hospitals. It means our clinical standards, safety protocols, and outcomes are independently verified, not self-reported.
Medical detox, residential, PHP, IOP, aftercare, and sober living, all under one roof. The same care team and curriculum follow you from your first day of detox through long-term outpatient support. No handoffs to outside providers.
Our Foundation
Our whole program is grounded in positive psychology. Dr. Martin Seligman's PERMA model lays out the five building blocks of a life worth living, and recovery here is built around helping you rebuild each one. See how positive psychology shapes our treatment.
Rebuilding hope, gratitude, and optimism, even in the early days when they feel out of reach.
Getting absorbed in meaningful work and the daily practice of recovery.
Real connection with people who understand the work and support your sobriety.
Building a life that serves something bigger than yourself.
Setting goals and stacking small wins into momentum that lasts.
