Top 10 Tips for Maintaining Sobriety at the Holidays

By Dr. Jason Powers, MD, Chief Medical Officer ยท December 15, 2021

The holiday season carries real joy and real pressure. Stress, family dynamics, travel, and an avalanche of social drinking turn the calendar into a minefield for many in recovery. These ten tips can help.

1. Increase Your Support

Max out 12-step meetings, check-ins with your sponsor, and time with sober friends. Support is one of the most important ingredients of recovery. Look up meetings ahead of any trip and tell your support network what you need.

2. Strategize Self-Care

Rejuvenate on purpose. Yoga, massage, acupuncture, meditation, hikes, real food, and real sleep. You cannot pour from an empty cup.

3. Plan, Plan, Plan

Line up reliable transportation to every event. Drive yourself so you can leave when you need to, or bring a sober friend. It is okay to skip events that feel too high-risk.

4. All in the Family

Know who triggers you and limit contact accordingly. Lean into the family and friends who actually support your recovery instead of trying to fix the ones who do not.

5. Come Prepared

Show up to events with a non-alcoholic drink already in your hand. Mocktails, juice, soda, anything that keeps hosts from asking what they can pour you.

6. Say No to Known Triggers

Know your stressors and decline what feels like too much. "No" is a complete sentence.

7. Stay Spiritual

Shift the focus from material pressure toward gratitude, generosity, and service. That reframe addresses the scarcity and resentment that fuel cravings in the first place.

8. Be of Service

Volunteer at a food bank, shelter, or meal delivery program. Serving others quiets the self-focused thinking that often precedes relapse.

9. Build New Holiday Traditions

Make new traditions that reflect your recovery. Host a sober gathering. Speak at a meeting. Make a vision board for the year ahead.

10. Prioritize Sobriety

Your sobriety is your safety, your sanity, and your survival. Skipping a triggering event or rearranging a plan is a reasonable price for protecting it.
