Developmental Age Matters
Current research suggests biology and environment contribute roughly equally to addiction, with the ratio shifting depending on the person. The age someone first uses substances has a real effect on mental and physical development. Earlier use is associated with a higher long-term risk of addiction, in part because the developing brain is more vulnerable to chemical disruption.
Co-occurring Mental Illness
Genetics account for roughly 50 to 60% of the variation in risk for substance use disorders. Mental illness raises that risk further, often because people self-medicate to manage symptoms. When a mental health condition coexists with a substance use disorder, we call it dual diagnosis, and the treatment plan has to address both at once.

Environmental Factors
Family dynamics, peer relationships, socioeconomic stress, trauma, and loss all shape the path. Children raised in homes with active substance use face higher risk. Adolescents often start using because of peer pressure, poor judgment, or inadequate supervision.
