Practicing mindfulness and self-care benefits you, and it also benefits the people around you. When we take care of ourselves, it creates a positive ripple effect on those around us. Whether at the workplace surrounded by colleagues or at home with family, practicing mindfulness and self-care helps us feel better and also strengthens our relationships.

When we prioritize our health, we are better equipped to help and support the people we care about. By practicing empathy, kindness, and self-compassion, we create a positive and uplifting environment.

Why health and wellness matter

It is easy to get caught up in the hustle of everyday life. We often prioritize work, deadlines, and obligations over our own well-being. When we neglect sleep, overindulge in empty-calorie foods, or turn to alcohol to wind down from a long workday, the side effects show up over time.

Neglecting sleep leads to errors and omissions and partially to increased reaction time, and makes it harder to maintain focus and attention. Empty-calorie foods rob us of the nutrients of whole foods, often leaving us sluggish and tired. An unhealthy relationship with alcohol can lead to impaired decision-making, a weakened immune system, and serious health declines.

The good news is that we can avoid many health problems by prioritizing health and wellness. Studies show that the number of American adults who say wellness is a priority rose to about 50 percent in 2022, up from 42 percent in 2020. So what are some simple ways to practice wellness?

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of being present and fully engaged in the current moment. It involves paying attention to your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings without judgment. Mindfulness can be practiced through meditation, yoga, or simply taking a 30-minute nature walk.

One of the benefits of mindfulness is that it reduces stress and anxiety. By focusing on the present moment and letting go of worries about the past or future, you can feel more relaxed and grounded. That can help you approach challenges with a clearer and more positive mindset.

Incorporating mindfulness into your daily routine does not have to be complicated or time-consuming. Even a few minutes each day can make a real difference.

Diet, movement, and rest

Another important aspect of self-care is taking care of your physical health. That includes getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, and exercising regularly. By prioritizing your physical health, you increase your energy and reduce the risk of developing health problems later in life.

If you find yourself scrolling through social media in the late hours instead of resting, try putting your morning alarms in the next room to remove the digital distraction. Although it may be easier to swing through a fast-food drive-through, try meal-prepping on the weekends so you have healthier options when you are busy. If you struggle to move your body, try walking on a treadmill while catching up on your favorite show or doing a 15-minute HIIT session while a podcast plays.

Remember: the goal is not perfection, it is progress. Small, daily actions build up over time. There will be days you skip the gym or enjoy dessert. The goal is to gradually become your strongest, healthiest self, and that looks different in different seasons.

Taking care of you, taking care of others

Taking care of yourself also means taking care of those around you. When you feel happy and healthy, you are better equipped to help and support others. Practicing empathy and kindness can also boost your own well-being. Acts of kindness, no matter how small, can increase feelings of happiness and reduce stress.

When we engage in acts of kindness toward other people, biochemical changes happen in our brain. One of the most important is the release of oxytocin, a neurotransmitter that promotes a sense of bonding. Kindness can be cardioprotective. It can lower blood pressure and cortisol, a stress hormone that directly impacts how we feel. Oxytocin also releases nitric oxide, which dilates blood vessels and reduces blood pressure.

There is also research on oxytocin and its effect on reducing inflammation. Reducing inflammation protects you from chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes, and certain cancers, leading to better overall health and longevity. When we do good, we feel good. Showing kindness creates a chain reaction that causes others to do the same.
