We Do Recover: 36 Years of National Recovery Month

By Dr. Jason Powers, MD, Chief Medical Officer · September 21, 2025 · 4 min read

Back in 1989, conversations about addiction and recovery were almost always hidden. National Recovery Month was created to change that narrative, bringing recovery into public view and honoring the millions of people living it. Thirty-six years later, that work is still going.

National Recovery Month: We Do Recover

The movement has grown into a nationwide celebration of resilience that recognizes the people, families, and communities affected by addiction. Every September invites people to share stories and replace silence with community support, affirming that recovery is worth celebrating out loud.

From Survival to Thriving in Recovery

Recovery extends beyond sobriety. Early recovery may feel like survival, but true thriving means rediscovering laughter, purpose, and the ability to dream again. It involves reclaiming relationships, finding joy in ordinary moments, and building futures once thought impossible.

Recovery is built on a community. Together, we are stronger.

The Work of Recovery Is Far From Finished

While recovery statistics represent real victories, significant challenges remain. Stigma, barriers to treatment access, and shame still prevent many from seeking help. National Recovery Month reminds society that recovery is happening every single day, and it calls all of us to keep advocating for visibility and support.
