Real connection does not need alcohol. For a lot of people that idea sounds obvious until they try to live it. Happy hours, weddings, networking, casual nights out: drinking is the default at almost every adult gathering. What if that default is just outdated?
When you step away from substances, room opens up for the real thing. Conversation, presence, shared experience. For anyone in recovery, finding belonging without a drink in your hand can feel impossible at first. The good news: a movement is building toward exactly that.
On a recent episode of our podcast, Chris Marshall joined us. He founded Sans Bar, the first non-alcoholic bar in North America. His work is proof that social life without alcohol does not have to be smaller. It can be deeper.
About Our Guest: Chris Marshall
Chris spent eight years as a substance use counselor in Texas before launching Sans Bar in 2017. The pattern he kept seeing in his clients: people got sober, then got isolated. The bars and parties they used to live in were no longer safe ground, and no one had built a replacement.
Sans Bar is that replacement. Live music, themed nights, storytelling events. No alcohol. Started in Austin and has run pop-up events in cities across the country. Chris has spoken at the Aspen Ideas Festival, South by Southwest, and Bar Convent Brooklyn. He has 18+ years of personal sobriety. His memoir, Faster Than Light, is on the way.
Why Alcohol-Free Social Space Matters
Drinking is woven into how we are taught to socialize. After-work beer, toast at the wedding, first date at the bar. For anyone who chooses sobriety, for recovery, wellness, or faith, that default shuts them out.
The myth that you need alcohol to have fun is everywhere. Sans Bar is proof against it. The space is built for everyone, whether they drink or not, to actually enjoy being in a room together.
How Sans Bar Is Redefining Sober Socialization
Sans Bar is not just a bar without alcohol. It is a community space where every event is designed for connection. Live music, themed gatherings, storytelling, interactive workshops. None of it leans on alcohol as the social lubricant.
Beyond Austin, the model travels. Pop-up sober events in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago. Each one a working blueprint for cities that want to build the same thing locally.
Overcoming the Discomfort of Change
Going sober, or even just choosing more alcohol-free events, feels awkward at first. Society equates drinking with social ease, so the worry is real: will I feel out of place, will I be the only one?
Discomfort is often a sign of growth. Without alcohol you get clarity, confidence, and a sharper read on the room. The skill of being present in a social setting without a drink takes practice. It also pays back.
If you are sober-curious or you are stepping into your first sober social setting, walk in open and curious. Whether that is a Sans Bar event, a new hobby, or just rethinking the same Friday night, the willingness to do it differently is where the real fulfillment shows up.
