Created for Connection: How We Heal Stronger, Together

By Dr. Jason Powers, MD, Chief Medical Officer · June 13, 2025 · 4 min read

Recovery is rarely a solo project. The longer you sit inside it, the clearer it gets: the people you walk with shape what is possible. On a recent Positive Recovery MD podcast, we sat down with Brett Bagley of The Phoenix to talk about exactly that.

Get to Know Our Guest, Brett Bagley

Brett Bagley serves as a Regional Marketing Specialist for The Phoenix, a national movement that harnesses the power of community and belonging to transform how society approaches addiction and recovery. Originally from Belton, Texas, Bagley holds a Master of Social Work degree from Western New Mexico University and founded The Phoenix's Houston chapter in 2021. Within one year, the Houston community grew to over 3,000 members hosting more than 80 monthly classes.

Bagley's background includes work as a teacher and coach. She currently serves as a founding board member of the Party Sober Partnership and describes herself as a community organizer. As a mother of two and wife to an athletic director, she remains active in sports, music, and community involvement.

Movement as a Pathway to Mental Health

The episode emphasizes reframing physical activity away from performance metrics toward mindful self-care. Any form of movement, whether it is tennis, yoga, hiking, or simply walking your dog, can be healing when done with intention and compassion.

The Phoenix evolved its "run streak" challenge into a broader "move streak," reflecting this philosophy. This shift addresses a critical recovery challenge: the pressure to get it right can be overwhelming. By creating flexible, judgment-free spaces for wellness activities, communities reinforce that wellness is not about checking boxes; it is about showing up for ourselves in whatever way we can.

The Role of Allies in Recovery Spaces

Bagley's perspective highlights the importance of allies in reducing stigma and building supportive bridges. Healing communities grow stronger when they include supporters who are willing to listen, learn, and walk alongside others with compassion.

The episode emphasizes inclusive recovery spaces that benefit not only those addressing substance use but also individuals navigating mental health challenges. The underlying principle centers on re-humanizing ourselves and one another through widened circles that welcome the sober curious, loved ones, and allies, fostering a culture that values openness over perfection and belonging over judgment.

Created for Connection in Every Sense

Recovery emerges in this conversation as fundamentally communal rather than solitary. As Brett puts it: we were never meant to recover alone. Recovery is more than an individual journey; it is a shared commitment.

Through emotional honesty, shared experience, and a willingness to show up for one another, healing becomes not only possible but sustainable. There is no single path to healing, and proper support networks enable communities to welcome everyone authentically.
