Background

Dr. Jason Z.W. Powers is a physician whose career has run on two parallel paths since the beginning. He holds board certifications in both Family Medicine and Addiction Medicine, which gave him the full-body view of how substance use disorders interact with everything else a patient is carrying.

That medical foundation eventually pulled him toward a question that addiction medicine alone could not answer: why do some people with the same diagnosis, the same access to treatment, and the same support systems get well and stay well, while others do not? The search for that answer led him to the University of Pennsylvania.

Positive Psychology Training

Dr. Powers earned his Master of Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) from the University of Pennsylvania, the program founded by Martin Seligman and considered the home discipline of the field. Positive psychology studies what helps people flourish, not just what helps them stop suffering.

Bringing that lens back into addiction medicine, Dr. Powers built the Positive Recovery clinical curriculum. The approach centers on five drivers of well-being: positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and achievement. Every Positive Recovery client works through the curriculum during treatment.

Recognition

H Texas Magazine has named Dr. Powers one of Houston's Top Doctors six separate times. Sierra Tucson honored him with the Compassion Award for the way he carries his clinical work. He serves on the editorial board of Addiction Prevention and Treatment Magazine and has been a contributor to Huffington Post and Psychology Today, writing for both clinicians and the general public about recovery, resilience, and mental health.

Published Work

Dr. Powers is the author of two published books. When the Servant Becomes the Master is an A-to-Z reference for clinicians, families, and clients navigating addiction. The Positive Recovery Daily Guide is a self-help workbook organized around the same five drivers of well-being that anchor the Positive Recovery clinical model: positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and achievement.

At Positive Recovery Centers

As Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Powers leads the clinical model that runs across every Positive Recovery program. That includes oversight of medical detox protocols, residential programming, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and aftercare. He works alongside George Joseph, CEO, to keep the clinical model consistent across more than twenty Texas locations.

Dr. Powers lives in Houston with his wife and three children.
