Get to Know Our Guest – Mitch Leff, Mitch Motivates

In 2006, one week shy of his 19th birthday, Mitch found himself in rehab for drug addiction. After spending time in rehab, halfway houses, and collegiate recovery programs, he moved to New York and made something special of his life. He started ‘Mitch Motivates’ after noticing the need for experienced, independent experts in the recovery community. 

He has been in recovery since 2006, when he was only 19. For over 17 years, Mitch has been a leader and expert in addiction, recovery, sobriety, and mental health. In his book, My Addiction, My Superpower, Mitch shares his recovery journey in detail, in which he reveals the lessons he learned and breaks them down into twelve easy tips for anyone who has been impacted by addiction, mental health, or substance abuse.

Recovery is the daily choice of making a promise to yourself. By putting your sobriety first, you honor your own journey—and indirectly honor others in your life as well. When you choose to stay true to your goals and uphold your commitment to yourself, you become a source of inspiration. 

Committing to a life of recovery may mean setting healthy boundaries or stepping away from situations that challenge your sobriety. Protecting your growth allows your best version of yourself to shine, ultimately inspiring those around you.

Prioritizing your own sobriety isn’t selfish—it’s a powerful act of self-respect and self-love. As the saying goes, “You can’t pour from an empty cup.” By putting your needs first, you build a solid foundation that allows you to support those you love while also being your own biggest advocate.

The Power of Telling Your Story Through Positivity, Honesty, and Vulnerability

There’s incredible power in telling your story, especially when it’s done with positivity, honesty, and vulnerability. Many people struggle in silence, but your story could be the light that guides someone else through the dark. Sharing your journey—the highs and the lows—opens doors to connection, community, and healing.

When we tell our stories honestly, we remove the burden of shame and allow others to see us for who we truly are. Vulnerability takes courage, but it also builds bridges to those who understand our struggles. When shared with positivity, our experiences can be reframed from a narrative of loss to one of resilience and strength.

By choosing to focus on positivity, it doesn’t mean we ignore our pain—it means we see the growth and hope that can arise from the difficult times. It’s about extending grace to ourselves, recognizing that we can transform pain into strength and progress. It’s focusing on a “growth mindset” or, in many cases, “post-traumatic growth”. 

Moving Forward By Extending Grace

The journey of recovery is one of resilience, courage, and grace. Honoring yourself means putting your needs first, sharing your story with courage, letting go of ego, and finding strength despite setbacks. Keeping your practices simple and consistent is critical to staying on this path for the long term. One concept we often forget, though, is moving forward with grace—both grace for ourselves and grace for others on their own journey. 

When we extend grace toward ourselves, we can accept ourselves fully, even in moments of struggle or failure. Extending grace to ourselves means treating ourselves with kindness when things don’t go as planned and allowing ourselves to move forward without the weight of self-judgment.

Grace means understanding that setbacks are part of the process and embracing the imperfections of your journey. Extending grace for others means that, although we may not always agree with other people’s decisions, we can offer compassion. We’re able to see the progress they’re making without judgment. Often, extending grace to others means showing them how we were able to heal in recovery because we’ve been exactly where they are. 

The recovery journey is about building a life that honors who you are, finding meaning and purpose, and embracing the resilience you carry. Continue to move forward with grace, and know that every effort you make is a powerful act of self-love and courage.
