3 End of Year Reflection Questions for Your Recovery Goals

The end of the year is a natural moment to pause, take a breath, and look back on how far you’ve come. Reflection is a powerful tool in recovery because it shifts the focus from what went wrong to what went right. It allows you to honor the small wins, learn from the difficult moments, and step into the new year with renewed clarity and confidence. These three end of year reflection questions can help you set meaningful recovery goals and carry the lessons of this year into the next.

Whether you’re early in your recovery or several years into the journey, reflection helps you recognize the progress you’ve made and the strengths you’ve built along the way. Instead of focusing on what didn’t go perfectly, this season invites you to celebrate growth, acknowledge challenges, and reconnect with the intentions that guide you. As you read through these end of year reflection questions, take a moment to evaluate what lessons this year has taught you and how much growth and progress you’ve achieved.

Choosing to Focus on Progress Over Perfection

The first end of year reflection question you can ask yourself is: “What progress did I make in my recovery this past year, even in small or unexpected ways?”

Sometimes we forget how much progress or achievement we’ve made over the year until we take a moment to reflect on each month at a time. Was January the month you made the decision to live an alcohol free lifestyle? Or was April the month you decided to focus on strengthening your family and loved ones? In fact, August may have been the month you finally started saying “no” to the wrong opportunities and started saying “yes” to the right opportunities that aligned with your recovery goals.

Of course, major highlights have a tendency to shift our attention to the really big milestones, though it’s important to recognize that the small wins are just as important. Recovery isn’t a race to perfection, but rather a journey of progress. It’s easy to overlook small moments that others might not immediately see. In fact, some of the most profound moments of growth are those we achieve quietly.

As you reflect on your progress, let those moments be the fuel that propels you forward in the new year.

What You Can Learn About Overcoming Challenges

Another end of year reflection question you can ask yourself is: “What challenges did I overcome, and what did they teach me about myself?”

This question provides an opportunity to reflect on your character strengths and the strengths you lean on during challenging times. If you lead with curiosity, this strength enables you to ask deep questions. With this strength, you don’t try to avoid the obstacle; rather, you observe why the situation at hand may be challenging for you personally. Or, if it’s a collective challenge you and others may be going through together, your curiosity allows you to think outside the box in how to overcome.

If you lead with hope, it helps you consider the bright side and the broader context. With hope, you don’t feel threatened by things that don’t come easily; rather, you know that on the other side, there is something to be gleaned. Hope helps you see that although life may feel difficult in this moment, it won’t always feel that way.

As you reflect on how you may have overcome challenges this year, consider how much you have grown through them. And remember that each challenge only strengthens us and that there is always something to learn about ourselves. Sometimes, the very truth we learn is that we are stronger than we may have even realized.

“Seeing the Problem as the Portal”

We asked Jamie Demeris, Chief Marketing and Experience Officer, how he navigates challenges. He shares:

One of the phrases I come back to again and again is: “You have to see the problem as the portal.”

When I’m in a challenging moment or situation, it reminds me to stop resisting the discomfort and start walking through it, because that’s where the growth lives. Over the course of a year, we face plenty of these moments, but we rarely pause long enough to look back and see what they produced. Reflection gives me the chance to acknowledge that growth AND reconnect with what’s now possible.

Setting Intentions for the New Year

And for this forward-thinking end-of-year reflection question, ask yourself, “What intentions do I want to carry into the new year to support my continued growth?”

Now that you’ve reflected on ways you’ve made progress and might have growth through tough experiences, think about what you want to carry in the new year and what you’d like to leave behind. What thoughts or beliefs do you have about yourself that you’d like to let go of? What things would you like to experience in the new year? And what goals would you like to work toward to support your continual growth?

Meaningful change often begins with small, steady intentions. Even the tiniest shifts can create powerful momentum for your growth in the year ahead.
