Recovery is not linear. At first glance, that truth may seem overwhelming for those who prefer a traditional growth plan. One that has a strict follow-through for each step on the journey with no missteps or varying degrees of “success”. To some, having a more rounded, open goal can feel daunting, as if you don’t know which path to take or what your first step should be.
However, this truth should be deeply liberating. Recovery isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. It’s not a race to the top, nor a competition. Your journey isn’t going to look exactly like someone else’s. When we let go of the idea that healing must follow a perfect, upward path, we free ourselves from shame, guilt, and unrealistic expectations. That freedom gives us our own life back. It gives us room to breathe again.
Every setback, pause, relapse, or pivot —whatever name you give to not “hitting the mark” on the first try —becomes part of the process, not proof of failure. The ups and downs of recovery aren’t something to fear, but rather something to embrace. Reframing your journey can give you the freedom to grow stronger with every step. Here are three truths to remember about your recovery journey.
Cravings aren’t Commandments
As Dr. Jason Powers, Chief Medical Officer at Positive Recovery Centers, often shares, “Triggers aren’t commandments.” We don’t have to accept every thought we think. We can take captive our thoughts and behaviors. Just because we feel overwhelmed by a particular situation or experience doesn’t mean we have to give in to our thoughts. As Dr. Powers puts it, “cravings are like waves and if you can watch them without judgement, they can come and go.”.
If you are experiencing cravings, try finding healthy alternatives. Just like if you’re pursuing fitness goals, if you’re typical go-to is eating chips on the couch every day after work, try instead taking your dog for a walk or prepping a healthy meal with your partner. Similarly, if you’re struggling with alcohol cravings, try grabbing coffee with a friend or going for a jog around your neighborhood.
We can take our thoughts captive, and we don’t have to act on every thought we might think.
Relapse isn’t a Moral Failing
Relapse isn’t a moral failing; in fact, it’s a lot more common than you might think. Sometimes relapse is part of the journey, so it’s essential that you don’t beat yourself up if you have a “slip up.” Each moment, we have the opportunity to choose differently. Relapses remind us that returning to our old habits no longer works for us, and if we want to keep forging ahead, our mistakes are just another way for us to learn what works and what doesn’t. These “setbacks” aren’t setbacks, they’re mere stages to reset.
You are not your past, and your mistakes don’t define you. Just because you made a mistake doesn’t mean you’ve completely rewritten all your hard work. It doesn’t undo all the work you’ve put in thus far. Recovery is not linear, so while challenges may lie ahead, we know we can overcome them by getting back up and trying again.
Again, similar to a fitness journey. You don’t gain muscle by going to the gym once, and you certainly don’t lose muscle by eating cake for dinner. If there is still breath in your lungs, there is still a fighting chance at a new life in recovery. You can choose to make different choices and learn from your mistakes. Just because you made a bad choice doesn’t make you a bad person. The moment we realize this, we also realize how much strength and resilience we have left within us.
Recovery is not Linear; Recovery is a Lifeline
Recovery is not linear, but recovery is a second chance at creating a beautiful life full of meaning and purpose. Recovery is an anchor when life feels like it’s drifting off course, and it’s a lifeline that pulls you toward hope, healing, and wholeness. It’s about choosing progress over perfection and realizing that you don’t have to have all the answers. You don’t have to have every step carved out.
That’s why it’s a transformational journey and one that’s unique to you. It takes courage to ask for help, and it takes strength to keep going. And it takes compassion to meet yourself where you are, especially when things don’t go as planned.
